Today’s obituaries: James P. Coleman worked in the family floral business, avid golfer – syracuse.com

James P. Coleman, 94, of Brewerton, died Saturday, November 5, 2022.

Born in Syracuse, he graduated from Central High School and Syracuse University.

He carried on the family floral business until his retirement, according to his obituary. Coleman Florist was originally founded by his grandfather George Phillips, then run by his parents Edna and Edward Coleman, and is presently operated by Peter and Joan Coleman.

Jim was an avid golfer, past president of the Syracuse District Golf Association and former member of the New York State Golf Association where he served on the executive committee. He was a member for many years of the Lake Shore Yacht and Country Club, according to his obituary, and up until just last year he played at the Links of Erie Village.

Jim enjoyed building and flying his own model airplanes and was an active member of the Syracuse Thunderbirds Association, according to his obituary.

An active member of his community, Jim was a past president of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, member of Ducks Unlimited, the Optimists Club of Syracuse, Liederkranz and served as the treasurer of Empire Flower Supply.

Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fairchild & Meech DeWitt Chapel, 3690 Erie Blvd. E., DeWitt. Services will be private; burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Donations in his memory can be made to Hospice of CNY.
