Kalamazoo stores ready for shoppers on Small Business Saturday

KALAMAZOO, MI – One of the busiest days of the year for small businesses is happening Saturday.

Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26, is an important day for businesses on the Kalamazoo Mall, Adrianne Merkling said. She’s the owner of Adrianne’s Boutique, 245 S. Kalamazoo Mall.

“It’s one of those days where the local community makes a concerted effort to come out and intentionally support small businesses, especially locally on small businesses,” Merkling said. “It’s just a great day for community support and it’s just a fun day.”

This year has been rough for some business owners and sales Small Business Saturday can be more than stores sell in a month, Merkling said.

“It would be catastrophic for businesses to not have that Small Business Saturday,” Merkling said.

For the second year, Consumers Energy will be giving away Downtown Dollar gift certificates again this year during Small Business Saturday. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., employees will be handing out free $10 certificates at 157 S. Kalamazoo Mall, Nov. 26.

A total of 360 certificates for $3,600 will be handed out, Media Relations Manager Brian Wheeler said.

“Kalamazoo small businesses have been there for us over the past many years, and on Saturday, we hope to encourage the community to be there for those small businesses,” said Lauren Snyder, Consumers Energy’s vice president of customer experience. “With the Downtown Dollars program, we want shoppers to support the small businesses we know and love that are the backbone of the community.”

Downtown Dollars can be spent at more than 50 businesses in Kalamazoo.

The atmosphere downtown is always fun that day, Merkling said. There are fun things for kids and adults can enjoy alcoholic beverages within the Downtown Social District.

“There’s tons of gifts,” Merkling said. “There’s tons of fun, locally made items, things that you can’t find in big box stores available downtown.”
