Brothers bond over business – The Macomb Daily

Growing up as two of seven siblings in the Phoenix area, Steve and Tack Alanis had to learn to share.

Now the two brothers are sharing two businesses under one roof.

Steve, a U.S. Marine veteran, runs a Detroit Wing Company franchise, while Tack, who played football for California State University, has a Beyond Juicery + Eatery store. Both places are located on a 2,500-quare-foot footprint on Mound Road, just south of 12 Mile Road in Warren.

“It’s the first dual-concept store of its kind in the state,” Steve Alanis said. “You want to best-tasting wings, we have them, and you can go next door to get a smoothie to wash them down with.”

This marks Detroit Wing Company’s 27th store in Michigan and the fifth location in Macomb County. It is part DWC’s rapid expansion plans in which the company expects to open more than 20 new locations by the end of 2023, with 20-plus in development.

DWC offers all-natural chicken wings, tenders, 19 house-made signature sauces, and a variety of sides, including a trio of flavorful mac-and-cheese dishes.

Gus Malliaras, founder of Detroit Wing Company, said Warren has been on the company’s “wish list” for a long time.

“Macomb County is where we first opened our doors seven years ago, and since day one, the community has supported us and welcomed us with open arms,” Malliaras said in a statement.

After getting out of the service, Steve Alanis found work in the trucking industry before becoming a partner in Vivios sports bar on 12 Mile near Ryan Road.

Eventually, he was looking for other business opportunities. That’s when he decided to partner with his brother for the dual-spot store.

They started about 15 months ago, a construction crew began work on renovating the former Donut Castle and turned it into a smart-looking building.

Beyond Juicery was founded by the oldest Alanis brother, Mijo. It’s a healthy, fast-casual take-out eatery that specializes in smoothies, wraps, salads, light sandwiches and raw juice.

“Because Mound Road is such a busy area, this is more of a grab-and-go place,” Tack Alanis said. “It’s built for speed.”

Although born 12 years apart, the brothers have bonded over the years.

“We share absolutely everything,” Steve Alanis said.

“Ever since Tack was old enough to walk I’d put him on the gas tank of my motorcycle and we’d take off and drive around. As he got older and into high school, he moved in with me and stayed until he went off to college.”

Their father, Gerald “Jab” Alanis, a former long-distance trucker, gives the credit for raising the children.

“My wife is a good Christian lady who raised them, they listen to her,” said Jab Alanis, who came to Michigan to witness his two sons opening the businesses on Saturday.

To celebrate the opening of the Warren DWC, the company will host a grand opening event where the first 25 guests will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win free chicken wings for one year, the first 100 guests will win a free limited edition DWC beanie hat, and the first 300 guests will receive a free six-piece chicken wings and French fries combo.
